pop surrealist artist
Welcome!
I’m BT (they/she), a ripple of the Great Migration; the Nebraskan whose father survived the Alabama of the 1950-60's. My quest to find community has placed me in the Pacific Northwest. Now in Seattle, I sharpen my paintbrushes and vigilantly use my love and (ample) talent and tenacity to combat the fascism and racism still rampant today.
Living through the intersectional lenses of a queer, "mixed-race" Black person, I have always been keenly aware of fusions, duality, and the status quo, which informs my Pop-Surrealistic style of visual storytelling. My work is filled with attention-grabbing visual portmanteaus: bending expectations with a playful juxtaposition of subjects and styles. My biggest artistic inspirations are Kehinde Wiley, Louise Bourgeois, Tarantino, and Trey and Matt from South Park. As The Arts continue to be a personal life-saving catharsis, I often make a point to include humor in my work. Outside of my art practice, I work in healthcare, intent to use all of my talents to uplift my community.
…
I spent months going back and forth on whether or not to include a Content Warning for my Artwork. I decided since I often work with children and really, people with varying sensibilities of all ages throughout the community, radical transparency feels the most appropriate approach.
With that said, beyond the bright colors and clever creatures, I spend my studio time grappling with the multitudes of the human experience. Though I often make a point to use an approachable, humorous lens; as I process my relationship with the world, I’ve never been fearful to open a dialogue on such topics* as sexuality, suicide, racism, and genocide. (*including but not limited to)
Thank you for taking the time to sit with any discomfort you may feel or questions that may arise. You just might find a learning opportunity there! Any burning inquiries, comments, or concerns, please send an email to bteee1000@gmail.com. I’d love to hear your thoughts!
